Vol. 532 No. 2

Written Answers. - Schools IT Programme.

Ivor Callely

Question:

204 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Education and Science the process for applications and the office to which applications should be delivered by primary and second level schools in the Dublin 3, 5 and 9 areas for financial assistance to improve and enhance computer and information technology; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7041/01]

I refer the Deputy to my previous reply on 1 February 2001, in which I outlined the ICT grants which are available from my Department to primary and post-primary schools.

Under the Schools IT 2000 programme, grants have issued to all eligible schools and there is no need to make application. Expenditure under the minor works scheme – grant of £3,000 – is at the discretion of school authorities within the terms of Circular No. 4/2000. In the case of new second level schools or schools undergoing major works, the grant aid of computer equipment is catered for within the overall building application process.

Under the Department's initiative to increase the uptake of the physical sciences the post pri mary building unit issues capital grants of £10,500 to all qualifying schools offering the physical sciences at senior cycle level. These grants are to facilitate school authorities with the acquisition of IT and data-logging equipment for their science laboratories. Inquiries in this regard may be made to my Department's post-primary building unit in Tullamore. Applications for upgrade or replacement of existing IT equipment in schools may be made to my Department's post-primary building unit in Tullamore.
Schools wishing to take part in the leaving certificate applied (LCA) and restructured leaving certificate vocational programme (LCVP) should apply to my Department's post-primary administration section, Hawkins House, Dublin 2. The schools administration grant is paid on an annual basis to all second level schools within the free education scheme and no individual application is required.
