Vol. 532 No. 2

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Denis Naughten

Question:

221 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Education and Science if, in view of recent correspondence to his Department on behalf of Tarmon national school, County Roscommon, he will reduce the local contribution towards the new extension; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7178/01]

Under the new funding arrangements for building projects introduced in January 1999, the amount of the local contribution for school extensions was reduced from 15% to 10%. In addition, the contribution was capped at £25,000. These arrangements have been approved by the Department of Finance and are part of a general application. I regret that it is not open to my Department to depart from them in individual cases.

Question:

222 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Education and Science when funding will be approved for St. Patrick's boys' national school, Strokestown, County Roscommon, in view of a recent INTO report on its poor condition; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7179/01]

My Department is currently considering the most efficient and cost effective way of providing improved accommodation at the school.

In view of the large number of schools building projects currently being processed by my Department, it is not possible at this point to give any indication as to the timetable for the provision of the facilities.

The school authorities will be kept informed of developments.
