Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

74 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science if he is satisfied that the quality of accommodation in primary and secondary schools is in accordance with standards available in other countries; if the standard and quality of these facilities are in need of upgrading; if so, the extent to which this is necessary; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6895/01]

All new school accommodation is designed according to the highest standards and is built in conformity with international best practice.

In relation to the existing stock of schools, enormous progress has been made by this Government over the past three years in eliminating substandard schools.
Since taking office, this Government has invested massively in primary and post-primary school accommodation. For 2000, in excess of £200 million was allocated for school accommodation projects. This has been increased to over £220 million for the current school year. Under, the national development plan, 2000-06, an unprecedented £413 million has been set aside for school infrastructure.
