Vol. 532 No. 3

Written Answers. - Higher Education Support Schemes.

Richard Bruton

Question:

150 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason for the delay in submission to him of the review of the higher education support schemes which has been completed by a task force; the main recommendations in this report; if he is preparing a memorandum for Government in order to implement changes in the support schemes; and, if so, the main changes proposed. [7260/01]

Last September I appointed an action group on access to third level education to advise me on the development of a co-ordinated framework to promote access by students from disadvantaged backgrounds, mature students and students with disabilities. The group was asked to advise on the specific interventions which would be most effective in making further progress in this area.

I have just received the report of the action group which has been completed within a relatively short period of time. I am currently considering the recommendations and hope to be in a position to make an initial response in the near future.
