Vol. 532 No. 4

Written Answers. - Grounding of Vessels.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

153 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the policy of his Department in relation to ships running aground. [7653/01]

This question relates to the grounding of a vessel at Drogheda Port on 28 February this year and on 14 March last year. Such occurrences are operational matters for the relevant port company or harbour authority in circumstances where the incident takes place within the jurisdictional limits of such statutory bodies. I am advised that on the occasions in question, in accordance with standard practice, Drogheda Port Company notified the relevant emergency agencies, including the Irish Coast Guard, and these were placed on an appropriate readiness footing. In the event, on both occasions the vessel was soon successfully refloated without any injury to persons or any damage to the environment or the vessel. Drogheda Port Company reviews its port safety procedures on an ongoing basis to minimise the risk of such incidents.
