Vol. 532 No. 4

Written Answers. - Computer Security.

Denis Naughten

Question:

207 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Defence if his Department's computer system or web site has been hacked or if an attempt to hack it has occurred in the past three years; if so, when such an incident took place; the measures which have been put in place to protect against hacking; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8186/01]

The Department's website, www.irlgov.ie/defence, has not been hacked in the past three years. However the Defence Forces website was hacked once in mid-2000, leading to a temporary shutdown. Following this incident, a security audit and vulnerability assessment was carried out by a firm of professional consultants and their recommendations were fully implemented.

I am now satisfied that all possible precautions, in line with available security technologies, are in place to prevent a repeat occurrence of such incidents.
