Vol. 532 No. 4

Written Answers. - Car Theft.

Tony Gregory

Question:

512 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of cars stolen from a small estate (details supplied) in Dublin 7 during 2000 and to date in 2001; if joyriding is a serious problem in the area; and if the Garda Síochána have been requested to move gangs of youths lighting fires and drinking on the green area at the entrance to the estate; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7430/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that there has been only one unauthorised taking recorded for the estate for the year 2000 and none to date for the year 2001. I am further informed that there have been a number of incidents of so-called joyriding reported in this area, with two stolen vehicles located and recovered in the area for the year 2000, and none to date for the year 2001.

I am also informed that local gardaí are aware that youths gather on the green area mentioned to light fires and consume alcohol and that in the recent past a number of small fires have been discovered and extinguished by gardaí. I have been assured that the community Garda covering this estate gives the matter his fullest attention at all times, as do mobile and foot patrols. I also understand that close liaison is maintained by gardaí with local residents and neighbourhood watch groups.
