Question:

530 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of requests for free legal aid that were made in 2000; and the average waiting time for those granted; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7711/01]

I am informed by the Legal Aid Board that 8,775 requests for legal services were received by the Legal Aid Board during 2000.

In relation to the average waiting time, I am informed that the Legal Aid Board does not maintain information relating to the average waiting time for people seeking its services. However, it does record the length of time which the person who is longest on the waiting list has waited. The following table shows the average of these waiting times in respect of each law centre during 2000.
