Vol. 532 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Investigation.

Jim Higgins

Question:

532 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the situation regarding an investigation carried out by a senior Garda officer into allegations made by a member of the Garda Síochána (details supplied). [7746/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that a chief superintendent from outside the Donegal division was appointed to carry out an investigation into allegations made against members of the Garda Síochána in the Donegal division. Subsequent to the commencement of the investigation, the garda who had made the allegations in question, instituted proceedings in the High Court.

I am further informed by the Garda authorities that, as the proceedings relate substantially to the matters investigated by the chief superintendent, they are of the view that it would be inappropriate to comment any further at this stage. Given that the matter is now before the courts I share this view.
