Question:

573 Mr. Flanagan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of deaths each year for the past three years which occurred in Garda custody, in prison or in the work place; and his views on whether it is appropriate that mandatory inquests take place in all such cases. [8270/01]

The information requested by the Deputy in relation to the number of deaths which have occurred in Garda custody and in prison over the last three years is set out in the following tabular statement.

The Deputy will be aware that in accordance with Section 17 of the Coroners Act, 1962 a coroner must hold an inquest into such deaths.
