Vol. 532 No. 4

Written Answers. - Sports Funding.

Jack Wall

Question:

593 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the grants which are available in relation to the provision of skating facilities within local authority areas; if his attention has been drawn to the demands for such areas; if he will consider applications for the provision of funding for such areas; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8180/01]

Through the sports capital programme administered by my Department, funding from the proceeds of the national lottery is available to assist voluntary and community organisations with the development of appropriate facilities in appropriate locations which will maximise use in terms of participation in sport and recreation.

Applications under the programme are assessed in accordance with detailed criteria which are outlined in the guidelines, terms and conditions of the programme and assessed in competition with other projects in their county as distinct from local authority area. Specific provision of such playing areas or facilities purely on a local authority basis would be a matter for the Department of the Environment and Local Government and the relevant local authority.

The 2001 Sports Capital Programme was advertised in the national press on 15 and 17 December 2000. The closing date for receipt of application forms was Friday, 9 February 2001. Over 1,450 applications have been received under the 2001 programme, two of which are specifically for skating facilities – one for a skating and bmx park and the other for an ice rink. I intend to announce allocations under the 2001 Sports Capital Programme at the earliest possible date following completion of the assessment process.
