Vol. 532 No. 4

Written Answers. - Retail Prices.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

56 Mr. Quinn asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if she will consider requesting the Director of Consumer Affairs to carry out an investigation into the high price of compact discs in view of the variation in prices and the difference between prices here and in other countries; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [7117/01]

Deirdre Clune

Question:

120 Ms Clune asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if her attention has been drawn to reports of large variations in the price of compact discs; the plans she will take to address the situation; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [7617/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 56 and 120 together.

It is possible to purchase compact discs from a wide variety of retail outlets from specialist music shops and department stores to garage shops and supermarkets. It is also becoming much easier, in particular with the advent of e-commerce, for Irish consumers to purchase such products directly from outlets in other countries. I welcome the fact that there is a large variation in the prices for compact discs and I would strongly encourage consumers to take full advantage of the competition that exists in the market for these products by shopping around for the best value.
