Vol. 532 No. 4

Written Answers. - Third Level Fees.

Ned O'Keeffe

Question:

646 Mr. N. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will consider agreeing to pay repeat first year college fees for a person (details supplied) in County Cork. [7823/01]

My Department meets the tuition fees of eligible students who are attending full-time approved undergraduate courses at approved colleges.

Students who are repeating a year at the same level are generally not eligible for funding. This condition may be waived in exceptional circumstances such as cases of certified serious illness. Consideration of the circumstances in such cases is a matter for the third level institution, in the first instance.

My Department understands from the fees office at University College Cork that the case of the student to whom the Deputy refers is under consideration and that she will be contacted by that office regarding the provision of further medical evidence in support of her case.
