Vol. 532 No. 4

Written Answers. - Inhuman Labour Practices.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Question:

77 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the outcome of her meeting with Trócaire to discuss the issue of inhuman labour practices, and bonded labour in particular; the steps she intends to take to support the campaign by the International Labour Organisation to seek the elimination of all forms of forced or compulsory labour around the globe; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [7112/01]

I met representatives of Trócaire on 27 February last. I undertook, on behalf of the Government, to recommend to the International Labour Organisation – ILO – at its Annual Conference in June 2001, that: all Governments allow and support independent assessment of the extent of bonded labour in their countries; all those involved in developing and enforcing laws on bonded labour are properly trained; and the ILO sets up monitoring systems to record how many bonded labourers are freed and also the numbers of people convicted for using bonded labour.

Question No. 78 answered with Question No. 36.
