Vol. 532 No. 4

Written Answers. - Skill Shortages.

Denis Naughten

Question:

103 Mr. Naughten asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the measures which she is putting in place to address skills shortages; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [6293/01]

In order to facilitate the continued growth of the economy, the Government established in 1997 the expert group on future skills needs to forecast future skills requirements and to develop overall strategies to address identified labour force requirements. Progress on the implementation of its recommendations is set out in the group's annual report.

A wide range of programmes are operated by FÁS aimed at increasing the supply of trained people in line with the skill requirements of the economy. These programmes take account of the EGFSN's work. In addition, EI, IDA, Shannon, CEBs and the training networks programme, Skillnets, offer a range of supports to up-skill people in employment. My Department is also pursuing a skills based immigration based policy, notably through the FÁS Jobs Ireland campaign and work permits and visas schemes, to supply skills needs of the economy which cannot be indigenously met.
