Vol. 533 No. 1

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

150 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science if extra tuition can be given to a person (details supplied) in County Dublin; if she will be reassessed and provision made accordingly, and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8424/01]

As a result of Parliamentary Question No. 139 of 1 March 2001 tabled by the Deputy, my Department's inspectorate was asked to investigate the special needs of the pupil in question.

The inspector has now reported. I understand that the school has made no application for the provision of extra tuition for the pupil in question. Applications for additional or supportive tuition on behalf of a pupil are generally made by the principal of the school in which the child is enrolled and are supported by a report from a professional person, such as a psychologist, outlining the reasons for additional support. If an application is made it will be considered carefully by my Department.
