Vol. 533 No. 1

Written Answers. - Loran-C Navigation Masts.

Proinsias De Rossa

Question:

63 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the progress made to date in his discussions with coastal communities regarding possible locations for the Loran-C navigation mast; when it is expected that a final decision will be made on the location; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8120/01]

There have been no further developments on this issue since I replied to a previous parliamentary question on 8 February, 2001. The position remains that two coastal communities have expressed interest in having the Loran-C mast located in their areas and preliminary meetings have been held with representatives from those areas by officials of my Department. I cannot, at this stage, say when the assessment of these alternative sites in terms of technical feasibility and planning considerations will be complete. I assure the Deputy that I am anxious to complete this process as quickly as possible so our international commitments can be fulfilled.
