Written Answers. - Anti-Racism Measures.

Jim Mitchell

Question:

158 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the total amount of Exchequer funding given to the National Consultative Committee on Racism and Interculturalism in 1999 and 2000 respectively; and the estimated Exchequer contribution to this body for 2001 and 2002. [9140/01]

The National Consultative Committee on Racism and Interculturalism (NCCRI) received funding from my Department of £103,721 in 1999. In 2000, £150,000 was provided to the NCCRI in the estimates. An additional allocation was provided to carry out an evaluation of the forthcoming anti-racism awareness programme and to organise the National Conference on Racism. The outturn in 2000 was £215,297. My Department also provided the NCCRI with an office premises and facilities at no cost to the committee. In 2000, the NCCRI rented additional office premises at a cost of £25,000 per annum. The rent for the additional premises is paid by the NCCRI out of its annual allocation.

The NCCRI also received a grant of £6,000 in 2000 from the Department of Foreign Affairs towards the costs of the National Conference on Racism. In the same year the Department of Social, Community and Family Affairs provided £20,835 to the NCCRI for anti-racist initiatives under the community development programme.

In 2000, the NCCRI also earned income from anti-racism awareness training. It established its own training unit which provided anti-racism awareness training to Departments, national media organisations, trade unions, employer and community organisations. The total income earned by its training unit in 2000 was £3,465.

An amount of £196,000 has been allocated to the NCCRI in respect of 2001. The allocation for 2002 has been estimated at £203,000. These amounts may be amended if the NCCRI is requested to carry out additional tasks in connection with the forthcoming anti-racism awareness programme. In addition, it is expected that £50,000 will be provided in each of the years 2001 and 2002 by the Department of Social, Community and Family Affairs under the community development programme.
