Vol. 533 No. 4

Written Answers. - Horse-Drawn Carriages.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

172 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will remove the requirement for horse-drawn hackney licensed drivers to have their names and addresses displayed publicly on their vehicles. [9257/01]

The regulations governing horse-drawn carriages are covered in the Dublin Carriages Act, 1853-55, as amended.

There is no obligation for horse-drawn hackney licenced drivers to have their names and addresses displayed publicly on the vehicles they are driving. The proprietor of a licensed vehicle shall, at all times, cause to be displayed the name and address of the vehicle and the name and address of its proprietor on the sides of the carriage.
With regard to the possibility of removing the requirement for a proprietor's name and address to be displayed publicly on the vehicle, I have sought Garda observations on this proposal and, as soon as these proposals are to hand, I will communicate further with the Deputy.
