Question:

48 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Defence the plans he has to refurbish the Army barracks at Custume, Athlone, and Columb, Mullingar, County Westmeath; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9062/01]

With regard to Custume barracks, Athlone, works at an estimated cost of £2 million are expected to commence later this year. These include refurbishment of the guardroom and armoury, tarmacadam of the barrack services and gym areas, and painting of the billet block. During the last three years, various upgrading projects at a total cost of almost £1 million have been carried out at the barracks.

The upgrading of fire safety measures in Columb barracks, Mullingar, at an estimated cost of £100,000 is due to start later this year, while upgrading works at a total cost of £325,000 were carried out during the last three years.
