Question:

134 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Health and Children the funding available from his Department to each of the health boards over the past five years for advertising in relation to his Department's concerns at drug abuse; the funding that his Department has used over the past five years in relation to drug abuse prevention advertising; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9207/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 120 and 134 together.

The amount spent by my Department on advertising for the prevention of drug abuse and AIDS in the years 1996 to 2000 was approximately £1.28 million. However, while no specific funding has been provided to health boards for advertising in relation to this issue, funding was provided each year to develop a range of appropriate responses to the drug abuse problems in the respective boards. Since 1996 an additional sum of £32 million has been provided to health boards for drug misuse services. This additional funding covers the cost of treatment services as well as education and prevention services.
