Question:

123 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of deaths caused by road traffic accidents in Counties Louth and Meath over the past five years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9430/01]

Full statistics and analysis on road traffic accidents are published by the National Roads Authority in its annual Road Accident Facts reports. The most recently published report is in respect of 1999 and that report, along with reports relating to previous years, are available in the Oireachtas Library. The reports, which are compiled from information supplied by the Garda Síochána, show that the number of persons killed in road accidents in Counties Louth and Meath over the past five years was:

The NRA is also carrying out a special study of road accident patterns in Border counties, including Louth. This study should be available later this year.
