Vol. 533 No. 5

Written Answers. - Foot and Mouth Disease.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

13 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the discussion he has had with the United Kingdom's Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food with a view to precautions being taken by the United Kingdom authorities to minimise the danger of spreading the foot and mouth disease to Ireland. [9130/01]

I have already informed the House that I am in regular contact with both Nick Brown and Bríd Rodgers, both to express my support for their efforts to control and eradicate the disease and to seek to ensure the measures they take address the need to reduce any risk of the spread of the disease to this jurisdiction. I will continue to maintain these contacts and to ensure that there is full co-operation, both at political and at official level, in the continuing efforts to control and eradicate foot and mouth disease.
