Vol. 533 No. 5

Written Answers. - Purchase for Destruction Scheme.

Johnny Brady

Question:

35 Mr. J. Brady asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the number of cattle purchased in the destruct scheme; the proportion of culled cows slaughtered; the numbers expected to be purchased by 30 June 2001; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9122/01]

Up to 23 March 2001, 159,171 cattle have been slaughtered under the purchase for destruction scheme. Of these, 30% have been cows. The number of cattle expected to be purchased under the scheme by 30 June is a function of market conditions between now and then. My best estimate at this time is that a further 150,000 animals will be slaughtered between now and the end of June under the scheme.
