Vol. 533 No. 5

Written Answers. - Animal Destruction Scheme.

Phil Hogan

Question:

49 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the means by which carcases are being stored under the animal destruction scheme; and if he is satisfied that there is sufficient storage to deal with this scheme for the year 2001; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7862/01]

Carcases from the purchase for destruction scheme are not being stored. Material produced from the scheme is either being rendered at dedicated rendering plants throughout the country or in the case of specified risk material, SRM, being blast frozen and stored in selected locations until SRM rendering capacity becomes available. The meat and bone meal produced from the rendering process is being placed in store pending its ultimate destruction by incineration. All hides are being processed in Ireland at present and tallow is either being exported or used as a fuel. All these disposal activities are being controlled strictly in accordance with the relevant EU regulations.
