65 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the number of appointments made to boards, both semi-State and private, under the aegis of her Department in each of the past years 1997-2001; if she will give, in regard to each year and each board to which appointments were made, the number and percentage of males and females appointed to each board; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [9321/01]
The information sought is outlined in the following appendix. I have always considered the need for gender balance on State boards when making appointments and since coming to office, I have established a track record for appointing first-rate people of both genders.
The constitution of several boards mentioned in the appendix is governed by statute and I am obliged to make many appointments based on the nominations I receive. This effectively limits the scope to address some of the gender imbalances shown. The bodies nominating persons to boards have been advised of the Government's gender balance policy.
I hope to see continued improvements in the gender balances of State boards under my aegis, and all boards in the public and private sector in the coming months and years.
