Vol. 533 No. 5

Written Answers. - Animal Feedstuffs.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

94 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development if he has satisfied himself that the importation of all animal feeds has ceased with particular reference to protection against BSE; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9414/01]

I assume the Deputy is referring to the importation of processed animal proteins. Under the provisions of the European Communities (Processed Animal Products) Regulations, 2000, S.I. No. 486 of 2000, certain protection measures with regard to transmissible spongiform encephalopathies and the feeding of animal protein were given effect in Irish law on 29 December 2000 and entered into force on 1 January 2001. In effect the legislation prohibited the importation of processed animal proteins except under licence and subject to specific conditions and the feeding of processed animal proteins to farmed animals. Stocks on hand were withdrawn from the market, distribution channels and on-farm storage. My Department is continuously monitoring this situation and where necessary will take the appropriate action to ensure compliance with the measures required by this legislation.
