Vol. 533 No. 5

Written Answers. - Economic Strategy.

Denis Naughten

Question:

97 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Finance the action he is taking to redress the problem of low disposable income; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6288/01]

The best approach towards enhancing low disposable incomes is to pursue policies which increase the numbers of jobs available and which improve the quality of jobs on offer. Success in these respects broadens opportunity to achieve higher levels of real earnings. The stability and growth oriented economic and budgetary strategy being pursued by the Government is a core requirement for expanding employment and enhancing its overall quality.

According to the CSO, total employment rose by over 5% per annum in the three years to mid-2000; and aggregate disposable income – supported by the personal tax reductions and welfare increases which growth has made possible – rose by over 8% through 1997 and 1998, the latest year available. The available indicators point to ongoing gains in both respects.
