Vol. 533 No. 6

Written Answers. - River Improvement Works.

Tom Enright

Question:

186 Mr. Enright asked the Minister for Finance the plans he has to clean and maintain the Silver River which runs through counties Laois and Offaly; and if he will make a statement as regards the work the Office of Public Works intends undertaking on this river in the next 12 months. [9494/01]

The Silver River is a tributary of the River Brosna, which is maintained by the Commissioners of Public Works under the provisions of the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945.

Extensive maintenance works were carried out on the Silver River between 1993 to 1995. It is now due for maintenance again and has been included in the programme of works for 2001. Maintenance operations are currently suspended because of restrictions, which have been put in place due to the foot and mouth disease. When operations recommence work will be carried out on the Silver River as part of the maintenance programme.
