Vol. 533 No. 6

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

Martin Brady

Question:

355 Mr. M. Brady asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will initiate procedures to locate a Garda station in Donaghmede, Dublin 13; and if there are any proposals to increase the staffing levels in Coolock Garda station. [9438/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities, which are responsible for the detailed allocation of personnel and resources to individual areas, that there are no plans to locate a Garda station in Donaghmede.

A Garda clinic was opened in Donaghmede shopping centre on 11 December 1987. It is open to the public as follows: Monday-Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.; Wednesday-Thursday-Friday, 11 a.m. to 12 noon, 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The Donaghmede area receives maximum Garda attention at all times from available resources. Two neighbourhood gardaí constantly patrol the area in question.

Mobile patrols include patrol car, patrol van and the district detective unit car. The divisional task force and the drugs unit, Coolock, also patrol the area and checkpoints are operated.

The school attendance officer, JLO personnel and community policing personnel – one sergeant and six gardaí – visit the schools on a regular basis and give school talks and lectures concerning drug related problems, vandalism, public disorder and general crime. They also liaise with the various community voluntary groups and advise them of related problems. The community policing unit has good working relations with the neighbourhood watch schemes in the area and this co-operation has had a positive impact in the fight against crime.

I am further informed by the Garda authorities that the current manpower strength, 2 April 2001, of Coolock Garda station is 89, all ranks. Resources are augmented from within the division as required. The area is patrolled by the div isional traffic unit and task force and by the district drug unit. The situation will be kept under review and when additional manpower next becomes available the needs of the area will be fully considered within the overall context of the needs of Garda districts throughout the country.
