Vol. 533 No. 6

Written Answers. - ECOFIN Council Meetings.

Jack Wall

Question:

46 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Finance if he will make a statement in relation to the meeting of ECOFIN on 23 March 2001 in Stockholm. [9756/01]

A meeting of the ECOFIN Council took place in Stockholm on 22 March on the margins of the European Council of 23-24 March 2001. ECOFIN was essentially concerned with finalising work concerning the final Report of the Committee of Wise Men on the regulation of the European securities markets, sometimes called the Lamfalussy report. The ECOFIN Council agreed on its report to the European Council in this matter, together with the text of a draft resolution to be considered by the European Council on the report.

The European Council subsequently approved the resolution put to it by ECOFIN and expressed the view that it constituted a good platform for effective co-operation between the Commission, the Council and the European Parliament in this area. Apart from being in Stockholm to attend the ECOFIN Council meeting, Finance Ministers also attended various sessions of the European Council.
