Vol. 533 No. 6

Written Answers. - Disposal of Vehicles.

Austin Currie

Question:

371 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will arrange for the Garda Síochána to take the lead role in a situation where there is uncertainty over who has responsibility for the disposal of company cars (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9586/01]

The question on the law governing the disposal of vehicles, often irresponsibly sold on to young people, is governed by the Road Traffic Acts and the Waste Management Act, 1996. This legislation comes within the remit of the Department of the Environment and Local Government.

While the Garda have certain powers in relation to the disposal of vehicles under the Road Traffic Acts, the Minister for the Environment and Local Government is currently addressing the issue of the disposal of such vehicles.
