Vol. 533 No. 6

Written Answers. - Probation and Welfare Service.

Denis Naughten

Question:

377 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform when he plans to recruit staff into the probation and welfare service so that section 11 of the Children Act, 1997 can be implemented; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9607/01]

Section 11 of the Children Act, 1997, inserted new sections 26 – social reports in the District Court – and 28 – appointment of guardian ad litem for a child and provision for separate representation – in the Guardianship of Infants Act, 1964 which remain to be brought into operation by ministerial order. As I indicated in reply to Parliamentary Questions Nos. 25 and 101 on 1 March 2001, the matter is adverted to in the Government's national children's strategy as part of its action plan. It is in that context that the associated National Children's Office will help to advance the various national goals and objectives contained in the strategy, in consultation with Departments and agencies.
