Vol. 533 No. 6

Written Answers. - Garda Operations.

Tony Gregory

Question:

380 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will request a report from An Garda Síochána regarding their response to the detailed account of lawlessness outlined in a report by a residents' association in Dublin 7 (details supplied); the action gardaí will take to alleviate the situation; the number of gardai, both on foot and mobile patrols, available to the area concerned; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9665/01]

Following receipt of this correspondence, the superintendent at the Bridewell arranged for an inspector and sergeant to meet the residents group to discuss their concerns.

During a meeting on the 23 March 2001, I understand that the matter of setting up a neighbourhood watch scheme in the area was discussed, and is currently being dealt with. In addition, a garda has been appointed to liaise with the residents' committee. The local Garda management are of the opinion that the establishment of a neighbourhood watch scheme should help residents voice their concerns in the future. I am informed that the problems outlined in the letter, and subsequently discussed with the residents committee, have been entered in the station's "Attention & Complaints" book for the attention of all members attached to the Bridewell.

With regard to the policing arrangements in force, I am informed that four members of the neighbourhood police unit at the Bridewell Station have responsibility for this area and that all mobile patrols have been instructed to pay special attention to this area and foot patrols have been extended to cover this area between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. With regard to the complaints relating to cars, I am informed that no reports have been made recently to the Bridewell of vandalism to cars in this area.
I understand that the residents of the area also complain about problems arising from prostitution. I am informed that the area is constantly patrolled at night time, although these patrols might not be always visible to the residents and that there is a constant level of arrests for sexual offences in this area.
As regards drug dealing in this area, I understand that in the past six months there have been six drugs operations in the general area leading to nine arrests for various drug offences.
Finally, residents leaving their residences vacant can ring the Garda Station to ensure passing attention when their house is vacant for whatever reasons.
