Vol. 533 No. 6

Written Answers. - Termination of Employment.

Dick Spring

Question:

381 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the reason his Department has served termination of employment notice on a person (details supplied) in County Kerry only on the day of termination; if he will take steps to remedy the injustice caused to this person who had many years service with his Department; and when outstanding wages will be paid. [9668/01]

The person referred to by the Deputy was employed on contract as a temporary clerical officer at Killarney Garda Station on a part-time basis. This contract of employment was to expire no later than the date on which a permanent civil servant became available, or on 16 March 2001. In this case, a permanent civil servant was assigned to Killarney Garda Station on 12 March 2001 on transfer from the Houses of the Oireachtas.

I assure the Deputy that proper procedures were followed in this case. The person concerned was aware of the temporary nature of the employment and had previously been advised by the personnel division of my Department to apply to the Civil Service Commission and compete for appointment to a permanent position in the Civil Service. The person concerned was also advised as to entitlements due on expiry of the contract and I am informed that any outstanding payments will be made at an early date.
