Vol. 533 No. 6

Written Answers. - Tourism Promotion.

Rory O'Hanlon

Question:

415 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if his attention has been drawn to the fact that County Monaghan has the lowest revenue from tourism for overseas visitors of any county; if this relates to its peripheral position in the north west tourism region; the steps he intends to take to address this situation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9959/01]

Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation (Dr. McDaid): As the Deputy will appreciate, responsibility for promoting the regions, including individual counties, does not rest with my Department but with Bord Fáilte, the relevant regional tourism authorities and the industry in each region.
I am aware of the differing levels of performance throughout the country in relation to overseas tourism and have provided Bord Fáilte with funding for regional marketing to support marketing initiatives of the regional tourism authorities; with a high priority being given to the western, north western and midlands regions.
Responsibility for promoting County Monaghan rests with the North West Regional Tourism Authority and I understand that the County Monaghan tourism industry plays an active role in the affairs of the authority, participating in its promotional events both at home and abroad.
The tourism product investment scheme which will be implemented by Bord Fáilte under the national development plan will also have a strong focus on less developed tourism areas.
