Vol. 533 No. 6

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Pat Carey

Question:

432 Mr. P. Carey asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will provide extra home tuition for a person (details supplied) in County Roscommon; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9522/01]

The home tuition scheme is designed to provide compensatory home based instruction to students who suffer lengthy absences from school because of serious medical conditions. The pupil to whom the Deputy refers has an excellent school attendance record and, therefore, would not be eligible for support under the home tuition scheme.

Pupils who have been assessed as having special needs and are attending ordinary primary schools on a fully integrated basis are entitled to the support of the resource teacher service. The child in question is currently on the caseload of a resource teacher who serves three schools in the area.

My Department's inspectorate is currently reviewing the adequacy of the resource teacher support being made available to the child in question. As soon as the inspectorate has reported my Department will be in touch with the school authorities.
