Vol. 534 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

196 Ms Róisín Shortall asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will report on the situation relating to the replacement of the Garda station in Ballymun, Dublin 11; the position of Ballymun on the priority list for Garda station accommodation; if a site has been identified; if so, the location of this site; if a final decision has been taken in respect of the status of the new station as to whether it will be a divisional or district headquarters; the likely starting date for building; and if he will give a clear commitment to expedite this matter, in view of the deplorable condition of the existing station and the time constraints on the acquisition of a suitable site in the context of the regeneration of the Ballymun area. [10175/01]

It is proposed to build a new Garda station in Ballymun. The Office of Public Works has been in discussion with Ballymun Regeneration Limited about a suitable site for the proposed new station. The exact size and location of the site have yet to be determined, and are dependent on a number of factors, including the status of the station. I have received proposals from the Garda regarding the status of the new station and I am considering them carefully. I am fully aware of the requirements of the Garda Síochána and the local people in Ballymun and I am committed to ensuring that a station appropriate to those requirements is progressed with the minimum of delay.
