Vol. 534 No. 1

Written Answers. - Disadvantaged Status.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

215 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Education and Science if he is in a position to give a considered reply to the subject matter raised on the Adjournment debate on 21 February 2001 concerning the flight of trained teachers from schools designated disadvantaged; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10170/01]

I am aware of the difficulties that schools in the area referred to by the Deputy are experiencing in recruiting fully qualified teachers. The Deputy will be aware from the response to the Adjournment debate he refers to, and from replies to previous parliamentary questions on this issue, that this Government has introduced a wide range of measures since taking office to deal with the teacher supply situation at primary level. I am confident that these measures will help to ensure that the difficulties currently being experienced by some primary schools will be resolved.
