Written Answers. - Abortion Report.

Jan O'Sullivan

Question:

91 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Health and Children the progress made to date by the Cabinet sub-committee dealing with the report of the All-Party Committee on the Constitution dealing with abortion; if any plans have been agreed for the major campaign to prevent unwanted pregnancies; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9994/01]

Michael Ring

Question:

137 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Health and Children when he expects to hold a referendum with regard to the abortion issue. [10216/01]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 91 and 137 together.

The Cabinet committee is currently considering the fifth progress report of the All-Party Oireachtas Committee on the Constitution, dealing with the issue of abortion.

The report's proposals in relation to crisis pregnancies are among the matters being examined. While in principle the Government is committed to an approach along the lines set out in the aforementioned report, considerable preparatory work will need to be undertaken before a plan such as that proposed can be put in place. It is not possible at this stage to indicate a timescale in this regard.

The question of whether there should be a further referendum on abortion and, if so, its nature, are amongst the issues under consideration by the committee.

Question No. 92 answered with Question No. 80.
