Vol. 534 No. 4

Written Answers - Hospital Admissions.

Dan Neville

Question:

127 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Health and Children if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 119 of 8 March 2001, he will state the number of readmissions to the same hospital within one week by health board for 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000 whose ages ranged between 50 to 59, 60 to 69, 70 to 79 and those aged over 80; the number who were medical card holders; the number who were covered by health insurance; and the number who were male and female respectively. [10835/01]

The information requested by the Deputy is contained in the following table. The figures are derived from HIPE – hospital in-patient enquiry – data which gives details of activity in publicly funded acute general hospitals in the State. HIPE data is only able to record re-admissions to the same hospital as it is not possible to trace patients from hospital to hospital. The figures includes all in-patient readmissions, re-admissions for the same condition, for an unrelated condition and planned readmissions, and excludes day cases. Figures are provided for each of the years 1997 to 2000 inclusive. Please note that updated figures for 1998 and 2000 are being used and data for 2000 is not yet complete.

Health board refers to the patient's place of residence. Non-residents are not included in the table. Data on health insurance are not available.
