Vol. 534 No. 4

Written Answers - Motor Taxation.

Dan Neville

Question:

151 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the contribution from motor taxation revenues of the Local Government Fund to each local authority. [10830/01]

In line with the arrangements set out in the Local Government Act, 1998, all income from motor vehicle tax is paid into the local Government fund and, apart from administrative expenses, no motor tax income is retained at local level. In addition to motor tax, income from driver licence duties and certain miscellaneous fees and duties together with a contribution from the Exchequer are paid into the fund. The fund is primarily distributed to local authorities as general purpose grants, non-national road grants, and grants for miscellaneous purposes.

It is estimated that the total local government fund for 2001 will be in excess of £720 million of which net income from motor tax and miscellaneous fees is currently estimated to be in the region of £400 million. I assume that the Deputy is seeking details of general purpose allocations from the fund. Details of general purpose allocations to each local authority are set out in my reply to Parliamentary Question No. 107 of 9 November 2000. The Deputy may also be interested in details of non-national road grant allocations to each authority for 2001 which are set out in the Allocations 2001 Non-National Roads Booklet, a copy of which has been placed in the Library.
