Vol. 534 No. 5

Written Answers - Garda Recruitment.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

200 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the current strength of the Garda Síochána; his plans for further recruitment in line with requirements; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11229/01]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the current strength of An Garda Síochána, all ranks, as at 10 April 2001 is 11,689, the highest it has ever been. The programme for Government contains a commitment to increase the strength of the force to a record 12,000 by the end of 2002 and the latest recruitment competition will fulfil this commitment.

The need for further recruitment will be kept under review in my Department and any proposals in this regard will be a matter for consideration by the Government in due course.
