Vol. 534 No. 5

Written Answers - Physical Education Facilities.

John McGuinness

Question:

230 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science if the prototype for the construction of new gymnasiums at schools throughout the country is finalised as yet; the date that this process started; the reasons for the delay in its completion; and the position regarding the provision of gyms at the Christian Brothers secondary school, Kilkenny and the Loreto secondary school, Granges Road, Kilkenny. [11264/01]

There is no undue delay in formulating a template design for the construction of PE halls in second level schools. This process, which commenced approximately four months ago, is ongoing and will take some time yet to complete. The Deputy will appreciate that it is desirable to invest time in producing a quality product that can be widely used.

Loreto secondary school, Kilkenny, is one of four schools comprising the pilot template design programme. The confined nature of the site and inherent aesthetic constraints determined that the template is inappropriate in the case of the CBS secondary school, James Street, Kilkenny.
