Vol. 534 No. 5

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business, I propose to deal with a number of related notices under Standing Order 31 from Deputies Denis Naughten and Jim Higgins. I call on the Deputies, in the order in which they submitted their notices to my office, to state the matters of which they have given notice.

I seek the Adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the following urgent matter: the decision by SIPTU and the ESBOA staff at the ESB to withdraw their service next week following the refusal by the company to meet a 28% pay increase claim. The action will lead to widespread power cuts and major disruption to domestic and commercial users of electricity.

(Mayo): I seek the Adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to debate the following urgent matter: the strike action, on Wednesday next, at ESB power stations by SIPTU and ESBOA staff which will lead to widespread power cuts which will cause major difficulties for domestic and commercial consumers. The urgent need is for the Minister for Public Enterprise to take all necessary steps to ensure the strike is avoided.

Having considered the matters fully, I do not consider them to be contemplated by Standing Order 31 and, therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motions.
