Ceisteanna–Questions. - Departmental Funding.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

1 Mr. Quinn asked the Taoiseach the way in which it is intended to allocate the £280,000 provided in the 2001 Estimate for his Department under the Irish Sailors and Soldiers Land Trust Act, 1988; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10636/01]

Following an advertisement and assessment process, I announced on 22 May 1999 the allocation of funds totalling £1.2 million to 59 successful projects, in accordance with the terms of the Irish Sailors and Soldiers Land Trust Act, 1988. The process of disbursing these funds to the projects concerned has been ongoing since 1999. The figure of £280,000 included in my Department's estimates for 2001 is the total funding expected to be disbursed this year to the remaining projects that have not been allocated funds. There follows a list of those projects which have drawn down or are due to draw down funding this year.

The outstanding sum of £280,000 is relatively small but it is significant for many groups who applied for money. Will this sum go to new applicants? Is the list for applications closed? Is this simply a matter of ensuring that those who were allocated money are facilitated in drawing it down in respect of conditionalities that cannot be met? Are other factors preventing them from utilising the money?

I have provided a list of those who have been allocated funding, perhaps on a phased basis to comply with the projects they were doing or with conditions with which they were not previously able to comply but now can. There are groups in this list who encountered delays in putting their own funding package together. These allocations represent the end of my Department's funds and we are just facilitating the drawdown of remaining funds.
