Vol. 536 No. 3

Written Answers - General Practice.

Bernard Allen

Question:

180 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children if he is satisfied that general practice is being given parity with other specialist disciplines. [14133/01]

General practice plays an integral part in the delivery of our health care service. Late last year I received the wide ranging review of general practitioner services undertaken by the chief executive officers of the health boards. This was subsequently presented to and approved by Government. I now intend to engage in comprehensive, consultative discussions with relevant representative bodies such as the Irish Medical Organisation and the Irish College of General Practitioners on the significant issues surrounding the future development of general practice in Ireland. These discussions will also have regard to the joint IMO/ICGP paper, A Vision of General Practice.

In taking this strategic approach to the development of general practice, with the approval of the Government, I assure the Deputy that this area is being given full consideration and attention. My Department is fully committed to the development of an effective and accessible general practitioner service for all our citizens.
