Vol. 536 No. 3

Written Answers - Rent Control Sector.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

200 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 114 on 8 February 2001, progress has been made on the matter of assessing the impact of the Housing (Private Rented Dwellings) Act, 1982, on those remaining in the formerly rent controlled sector; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14171/01]

At my Department's request local authorities have undertaken a comprehensive survey of tenants in the formerly rent controlled sector. A total of 8,489 properties were identified from the authorities' registers and contacted. Based on the survey results, it is estimated that some 1,700 properties currently remain within the sector, the majority occupied by original tenants.

The results of the survey would suggest that less than 600 successor tenants nationally will be affected by the legislative changes to come into effect in July, 2002. My Department is examining the issue in the light of the survey data in order to determine what action may be warranted.
