Vol. 536 No. 3

Written Answers - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

Enda Kenny

Question:

201 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if the Belmullet sewerage scheme is to be included in his water services investment programme to be announced shortly; if he has assessed the application from Mayo County Council in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14194/01]

A brief for the Belmullet sewerage scheme was received in my Department in 1992 but was not approved.

The scheme was tenth on the list of sewerage schemes submitted by Mayo County Council in response to my Department's request to local authorities to undertake a fresh assessment of the needs for capital works in their areas and to prioritise their proposals on the basis of the assessments. The priority lists were taken into account in the framing of the Water Services Investment Programme, 2000-02, announced last July. Given the priority rating afforded to the scheme by the council, the level of competing demand and the funding available, it was not possible to include it in the programme at that time.
