Vol. 536 No. 3

Written Answers - Livestock Marts.

P. J. Sheehan

Question:

101 Mr. Sheehan asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the date that he intends to allow marts to reopen for cattle sales. [13975/01]

On the advice of the expert group, I do not believe we have reached the stage where it is safe to allow trading of any susceptible species through livestock marts to resume. This matter is, however, being kept under review by the expert group and I can assure the Deputy that I will take appropriate measures in relation to the phased resumption of marts when the expert group on the basis of a risk assessment makes recommendations in this regard.

The Deputy will be aware that marts are already being used as collection points for the assembly of cattle, sheep and pigs going direct for slaughter. In addition, protocols are being prepared for the possible limited resumption of marts for some sales.
